What will your Approbation cost?
Choose your profession, where your qualification is from and the state. You get the official fees that apply there, together with the regulation the state relies on.
Example and notes
Example for a doctor with a qualification from outside the EU in Saxony: application €490, temporary permit (Berufserlaubnis) €490, specialist language test €590, knowledge test €850. That makes €2,420 in official fees. Translations, certifications and travel come on top.
The total in the calculator is a range if a state publishes a fee range. The authority sets the exact amount only in its notice. Data as of 8 September 2026.
For a qualification from the EU, the authority can ask for proof of German or a specialist language test. The calculator shows the fee for the specialist language test only for qualifications from outside the EU.
What this calculation deliberately leaves out
The largest costs of your procedure are not charged by any authority, so they are not in any fee schedule we could cite:
- certified translations of your certificates, curriculum and records
- apostilles or legalisation in your home country
- obtaining documents from universities and authorities abroad
- travel and accommodation for examinations
- preparation courses for the knowledge test
These costs depend on your country, the number of documents and the language. We give no figure; any flat rate would be a guess. We discuss an estimate for your documents with you.
Funding: Many of these costs are eligible: translations, certifications and fees up to €600 (procedure costs) and preparation courses up to €3,000 (qualification). The funding guidelines exclude the cost of obtaining required documents, for example certificates from abroad. Up to €4,800 through the recognition grant, if you apply before your licensing application and live in Germany.
